Grade 8 Mathematics – Range
COURSE OVERVIEW
In this course, learners will develop a strong understanding of the range and how it is used to describe the spread of values within a dataset.
Learners will learn how to identify the highest and lowest values, calculate the range correctly, compare the spread of different datasets, and interpret what the range tells us about variation in data.
The course builds on learners’ understanding of organised data and measures such as the mean, median and mode, helping them develop a more complete understanding of how datasets can be described and compared.
The course includes video lessons, worked examples, quizzes and a mastery test to strengthen learners’ statistical reasoning and prepare them for Grade 8 CAPS Mathematics assessments.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
- Understand the meaning of the range.
- Understand that range is a measure of the spread of data.
- Identify the highest value in a dataset.
- Identify the lowest value in a dataset.
- Calculate the range using:
Range = Highest Value − Lowest Value
- Calculate the range from unordered data.
- Calculate the range from ordered data.
- Determine the range from a frequency table.
- Compare the ranges of different datasets.
- Interpret what a small range indicates about a dataset.
- Interpret what a large range indicates about a dataset.
- Understand how extreme values can affect the range.
- Determine missing values when information about the range is provided.
- Apply the range to real-life data.
- Solve Grade 8 CAPS exam-style questions involving range.
