Grade 9 Mathematics – Measures of Central Tendency
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course develops learners’ ability to calculate and interpret the mean, median and mode of numerical data sets.
Learners will explore how each measure describes the centre or typical value of a data set, calculate these measures from raw and organised data, and determine which measure is most appropriate in different situations.
Particular emphasis is placed on interpreting results rather than simply performing calculations, including understanding how extreme values can influence measures of central tendency.
Through structured video lessons, worked examples, quizzes, real-world applications and exam-style questions, learners will develop the statistical reasoning required for Grade 9 examinations and FET Phase Mathematics.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of central tendency.
- Calculate the mean of a data set.
- Calculate the median of a data set.
- Identify the mode of a data set.
- Determine the median for odd and even numbers of observations.
- Identify data sets with more than one mode.
- Recognise when a data set has no mode.
- Calculate measures of central tendency from frequency tables.
- Determine missing values when the mean is known.
- Understand the effect of extreme values on the mean.
- Compare the mean, median and mode.
- Select an appropriate measure for a particular situation.
- Interpret measures of central tendency in context.
- Solve Grade 9 exam-style statistical problems.
