Grade 9 Mathematics – Probability Concepts & Terminology

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course introduces learners to the fundamental concepts and mathematical language of probability.

Learners will explore the meaning of chance and uncertainty, distinguish between certain, likely, unlikely and impossible events, and learn how probability is represented numerically. They will also develop an understanding of experiments, trials, outcomes and events as the foundation for more advanced probability problems.

Particular emphasis is placed on developing the correct probability terminology and reasoning skills needed before learners progress to sample spaces, probability calculations, tree diagrams and two-stage experiments.

Through structured video lessons, worked examples, quizzes and exam-style questions, learners will build the foundations required for Grade 9 examinations and FET Phase Mathematics.

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

• Explain probability as a measure of chance or likelihood.
• Use appropriate probability terminology.
• Identify a probability experiment.
• Explain what a trial is.
• Identify possible outcomes of an experiment.
• Distinguish between an outcome and an event.
• Classify events as impossible, unlikely, equally likely, likely or certain.
• Represent probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages.
• Understand that probability lies between 00 and 11.
• Interpret probability values in context.
• Identify equally likely outcomes.
• Recognise complementary events at an introductory level.
• Apply probability terminology to Grade 9 exam-style situations.
